Join Sea Smart for an extraordinary Healing Medicine Pouch Workshop led by Shona Sparrow, Syilx & Nlaka'pamux Knowledge Keeper, and Lana Arnold, Syilx & Standing Buffalo Knowledge Keeper. Shona and Lana will guide participants through the intricate art of crafting healing medicine pouches while sharing traditional knowledge, Indigenous values, and the profound connections between medicines, land, water, family, and community. 

  • Traditional Knowledge: Shona and Lana will impart the traditional knowledge involved in crafting a healing medicine pouch, emphasizing the connection with the land and water, and the importance of Indigenous values. 

  • Hand-Harvested Medicines: Explore the significance of hand-harvested medicines, including Sage, Sweetgrass, Cedar, and Tobacco, gathered in season with protocols in place. Shona will speak about each medicine using the four-direction medicine wheel. 

  • Devil’s Club: Understand the meaning and healing properties of devil’s club, a unique addition to the pouches, as Shona delves into its significance. 

  • Buckskin Pouch Material: Participants will be provided with buckskin cut to size for their pouches. Shona will discuss hunting practices, emphasizing the value of utilizing every part and minimizing waste. 

  • Pony Beads: Discover the story behind Pony beads hand-picked by youth in the family, enhancing the cultural richness of the pouches. 

  • Elder Knowledge and Stories: Throughout the workshop, Shona will share insights from Elder knowledge keepers and cultural stories, adding depth to the crafting experience. Personalization and Advice: Learn from Shona about how to wear your pouch, the significance of personal touches, and advice on making your pouch special.
