Sea Smart's Summer Camp - A Student's Perspective

By Hanna, Sea Smart summer camp student

My name is Hanna and I recently attended a Sea Smart summer camp.

Hannah, a Sea Smart camper, smiling and holding a starfish on a Vancouver beach.

I first heard about Sea Smart at WE day this year when Dr. Elaine Leung spoke about global marine issues and the environment. I felt inspired because I am passionate about saving marine life and the health of our oceans. I want to learn how to educate other people so they can be more aware and hope that they take action. I do a lot of volunteering with my family, but the one thing that impacted me was all the shoreline clean-ups I have done. The amount of garbage and micro-plastics we found made me mad!

Sea Smart was a great experience - it taught me about oil spills and animal protection, microplastics and the importance of biodiversity. I enjoyed that we were outside all day and always beside the ocean. It was the best learning location for a camp like this. It taught kids the importance of the ocean in our world. I loved meeting the instructors because they are all educated and passionate about the same things I am. I loved meeting marine biologists and people who care. I would like to create my own company that is just like Sea Smart, or maybe I will work there while I study marine biology.
