About Sea Smart

Sea Smart is a not-for-profit organization who delivers innovative, engaging education programs based on science and current ocean issues to empower youth to be environmental champions in Metro Vancouver. 

Sea Smart teaches youth in Kindergarten to Grade 12 about current issues impacting our oceans and gets them brainstorming solutions in our school workshops, after school programs, and summer camps. Created by a marine biologist, Sea Smart helps youth understand the role they play in making the world a better place while building essential life skills such as creative thinking, personal awareness, and social responsibility.

No oceans, no us. Sea Smart’s innovative curriculum teaches youth about ocean issues with a solutions-based approach that is much needed in this day and age when environmental problems are overwhelming and it is easy to lose hope.

About the role

We are looking for a Project and Administrative Coordinator to aid in Sea Smart’s core goals of science and environmental education. The main focus is to develop and lead corporate and education programs, assist projects, ensure the smooth running of the office and help to improve company procedures and day-to-day operations.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Executive Director, the Project and Administrative Coordinator responsibilities include:

  • Project Coordination (40%)

    • Building and maintaining relationships with community and corporate partners

    • Developing and implementing corporate programs

    • Support other staff with after school programs and summer camps when needed

    • Maintain social media channels in coordination with the Communications Team

    • Plan and coordinate Sea Smart events, fundraising, and community outreach

  • Administration (40%)

    • Bookkeeping

    • Biweekly payroll with payroll program

    • Ensure filing systems are maintained and current

    • Create and update employee and operations manuals

    • Review and update company policies

    • Point person for maintenance, scheduling, supplies, equipment, bills and errands

    • Organize and schedule meetings, appointments, and bookings for Sea Smart Program Managers and Executive Director

    • Monitor and maintain office supplies inventory

  • Communications (10%)

    • Provide general support to clients via phone and email

    • Handle customer inquiries

  • Human resources (10%)

    • Support recruitment, train, and onboard new staff

    • Develop and maintain onboarding procedures

Qualifications Required

  • Proven office administration experience with a knowledge of office administrator responsibilities, systems and procedures

  • Proven knowledge and/or experience in communications, program coordination and/or education

  • Proficiency in a variety of office software (i.e. MS Office, Google Drive, CRM, bookkeeping, payroll)

  • Ability to clear criminal record check for the vulnerable sector within the last five years or ability to obtain and pass a clear criminal record check

  • Minimum emergency first aid and CPR C level certification within the last three years

  • Valid class 5 BC driver’s license (or equivalent) and driving for work purposes as needed is highly desired but not required

  • Having regular access to a reliable vehicle is highly desired but not required; if applicable, please highlight your vehicle access in your cover letter

Term of Appointment

This position is based in Vancouver and successful applicants must be willing to relocate to Metro Vancouver if they live elsewhere. 

Our core working hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday. The standard workweek for this role will be 37.5 hours per week. There will be some occasions where you will need to work during evenings and weekends. The work hours in such weeks will be adjusted to total 37.5 hours per week.

 

This is a full-time position that starts as soon as possible and ends Mar 31, 2020, with the potential to extend to a permanent position pending performance.

science communication educator

Sea Smart is looking for dynamic world-changers to help us deliver after school programs and our full-day school workshops. Join our passionate group of science communication and environmental educators in organizing and delivering high impact student programming to hundreds of participants in Vancouver. We are looking for individuals who have the passion and commitment to inspire youth to make a positive impact on the environment.

About Sea Smart

Sea Smart is a charity that uses fun, hands-on games and activities to teach youth in Kindergarten to Grade 12 about current issues impacting our oceans and get them brainstorming solutions. Created by marine biologist Dr. Elaine Leung, Sea Smart helps youth understand the role they play in making the world a better place while building essential life skills such as creative thinking, personal awareness, and social responsibility. Sea Smart’s innovative curriculum teaches youth about ocean issues with a solutions-based approach that is much needed in this day and age when environmental problems are overwhelming and it is easy to lose hope.

Through Sea Smart’s after school programs and school workshops, we aim to inspire kids to love and protect our oceans. Under the direction of the Program Manager, the Educator’s primary responsibility is to deliver programs in a fun and engaging manner to teach students about ocean issues and how we can help. In this role, you will be primarily responsible for delivering our after-school programs and school workshops, as well as participate with our public engagement events and other education programs as required.

Job Description

Under the guidance of the Program Manager, the main duties of the Educator are:

  • Delivery of after school programs, public outreach events and full-day school workshops

  • Using inquiry-based teaching techniques to promote wonder and excitement in students

  • Educating students aged 5-17 about ocean biology and conservation

  • Assisting with occasional outreach events

  • Engaging with people of all ages in public outreach events to promote ocean conservation

  • Travelling to various schools for workshops and programs

Qualifications Required

  • A strong background in science, environmental issues or sustainability

  • At least two years of experience working with youth (ages 5-17), ideally in a teaching environment

  • Proven leadership skills and exceptional teamwork abilities

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Planning, organizational, multi-tasking and self-directed work skills

  • Clear criminal record check for the vulnerable sector within the last three years or ability to obtain and pass a clear criminal record check

  • Minimum emergency first aid and CPR C level certification within the last three years

  • Marine biology experience is highly desired but not required; if applicable, please highlight your marine biology experience in your cover letter

  • Having regular access to a reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license is highly desired but not required; if applicable, please highlight your vehicle access in your cover letter

Term of Appointment

This position is based in Vancouver and successful applicants must be willing to relocate to Metro Vancouver if they live elsewhere. This contract is between September 19, 2019 to December 13, 2019, with the possibility of extension pending performance. After-school programs run from 3:00-4:45 pm and school workshops are between 8:30-3:30 pm, Monday-Friday. Hours of work are dependent on bookings and availability of the educator.

Remuneration

$15-$20/hour, based on experience.
