Ocean Design Lab is an innovative and hands-on program designed to inspire curiosity and passion for future ocean heroes. This program will educate participants about the environmental damage caused by bottom trawling. Students will redesign bottom trawling nets to minimize their environmental impact by building and testing prototypes in a friendly competition.
Students will use provided materials and a pretend budget to build improved nets while learning important skills like problem-solving and teamwork. Ocean Design Lab helps them understand how different fields work together to address environmental challenges for a sustainable future.
This two-hour design lab begins with an informative presentation highlighting the environmental consequences of bottom trawling. Following the presentation, students will collaborate in teams to redesign bottom trawling nets with the goal of minimizing their environmental impact. The teams will then build and test prototypes in a friendly competition.
Each lab is delivered to one class. Classes can combine for labs, but we recommend no more than 30 students per workshop so all students can engage in class discussions.
