Ocean-Friendly New Year's Resolutions for 2022

The New Year is a great time to reset and try setting some ocean-friendly goals for you and your loved ones. We know this year is a little different because we're still combatting COVID19, so we're bringing you a curated list of tips and goals to help you live a more ocean-friendly life in 2022.

Don't forget that resolutions and goals are personal, and we know everyone's lives are different so feel free to use some, all, or none of these tips, and don't be afraid to make them your own.

Commit to a cleanup once a month or bi-monthly. If you live near a beach, doing a beach cleanup can be a family-friendly activity for everyone! If you live near Vancouver, BC, check out our explore the shore guides that elevate your beach trip with fun activities and discover the species that live near your beach. You can also clean up local parks or forests to help keep plastic pollution down.

  1. Commit to buying as package-free as possible. We know it's not always easy to find plastic-free everything, but bulk buying options and package-free grocery stores like NADA Grocery can be a huge help! Bonus points if you do a trash audit monthly to see how much waste you're producing (and saving!) by buying package-free alternatives.

  2. Re-use what you can, and bring your own items wherever possible. If you have any reusable grocery bags, straws, or mugs, try to remember bringing them with you when you go to the grocery store or to your local coffee shop. If you don't have access to these items, try swapping out a single-use cup for a pasta jar or mason jar. This tip will get easier as COVID restrictions shift, but it's always a great thing to keep in mind!

  3. Switch one cup of coffee to tea per week. Did you know it takes 25% more water to produce coffee than tea? Making that swap once a week (or month) can still keep you caffeinated while helping our oceans!

  4. Try to commit to eating with the seasons. Are you looking for a diet change or a new challenge? While trying to eat less meat is a popular and great idea, we want to promote eating with the seasons too! Buying only in-season and local produce is a great way to support local, reduce the supply chain, and help our oceans. It's also a great way to find new recipes and flavours you might not have before!

We have a ton of other great tips and ideas for ways to reduce your plastic intake this year and live a more ocean-friendly life to save our oceans.
